Grandpa Bill

Oh how I love these two! My sweet Nanny and Grandpa Bill
Grandpa passed away 2 weeks ago....surrounded by his family.
Sixteen years ago he suffered a stroke and lost his ability to speak.
We have to wonder what his first words were in Heaven....
and if he's even stopped talking yet! :)
He is the most amazing man....kind, generous, thoughtful, funny, and loving.
We will miss him dearly....
but are so grateful for the time we have had with him....
and for the chance that we had to say goodbye
and give him messages to send to our Cody.

I just wanted to share a portion of my cousin Jentry's talk that he gave at his funeral.
It sums up our Grandpa so well.

"I sent an e-mail to my cousins asking them to share the things they loved the most about him and it’s funny how many of us chose the same things.

*At the top of several lists was Grandpa hugging and kissing us and opening his eyes wide and asking, “what do the little black spots in my eyes say?” We all knew the answer, which was, “They say I love you!”

*He had an unbelievable whistle. He would whistle entire songs.

*He always had a toothpick in his mouth and he would close his mouth around the toothpick when he gave you a kiss goodbye. As a child I always wondered how he did that without choking on it.

*We remember going down to his office at Continental Bank to watch the 24th of July parades.

*And how you always knew he and Nanny were at your house because he had a special honk when he pulled up.

*He would come home for lunch at the same time everyday. We Grandkids were always swimming. Grandpa would grab a quick bite of spam rice casserole, or tuna fish sandwiches, or sloppy Joes or whatever was on the menu for the day then he would either lay down on the floor with a pillow from the couch and have a power nap for 20 minutes, or else he would come running down the patio stairs and do a huge cannon ball into the pool. He would give us all a squeeze, put his suit and tie on and head back to work at the bank.

*Grandpa had a drawer full of green rubber bands that he would save from the newspapers….he used those rubber bands to hold his socks up.

*We remember dining at the Ratskeller Pizzaria.

*He loved blue. Blue hats, Blue shirts, Blue shorts and Swimming Suits….Baby Blue preferably.

*He and Nanny often cooked Sunday dinners and always had the best gravy. Grandpa’s Black and Yellow striped apron still hangs in the kitchen closet.

*We will never forget summers at the cabin where he and Nanny would sleep in their hunter Orange sleeping bags on the porch overlooking the river.

*The list goes on and on….He loved life and he loved his family.

The greatest thing about having He and Nanny for grandparents is… the fact that we can rest in peace EVERY night knowing we are loved."
WE LOVE YOU GRANDPA!
