IRONIC

So....last night we are sitting at the dinner table

eating pizza and making pinewood derbys

(I know, you're all jealous)

We have the following conversation:

MADDEN:

"Mom, what does "ironic" mean?

It was in my book (Diary of a Whimpy Kid)

when I was reading a few minutes ago

and I don't know what it means...."

MOM:

"Humm....ummm......well.....

Dad, what does ironic mean?"

(I love passing the buck!)

DAD: (said slowly and very thoughtful-like)

"It's a black fly in your Chardonnay.

It's a death row pardon 2 minutes late.

A traffic jam when you're already late....

(Maddens face gets more confused...

he looks to me with a look of "help!" on his face.

I look back at him equally confused...)

Bill pumps it up a notch and continues....

(more song-like....with a little beat)

DAD:

"It's like raaaaeeeain on your wedding day

(at this point I finally get it and I'm laughing hysterically....

poor Madden is just more confused)

It's a free ride when you've already paid

It's the good advice that you just didn't take

Who would've thought....it figures"

Bill finishes a strong rendition of

Alanis Morissette's "Ironic" song.

Of course he would. He's Bill.

Everything is music to the man....

Madden looks at us and says,

"YOU GUYS ARE WEIRD!"

I then tried to explain what "ironic" really means to him in a 8 year old way....

and I'm pretty sure he's just more confused now....
